A Marlborough Pinot Noir has taken away New Zealand’s most prestigious wine trophy for 2006.

Delta Vineyard Marlborough Pinot Noir 2005 has won the Air New Zealand Champion Wine of the Show Trophy, a first for the winery.

Delta Vineyard Marlborough Pinot Noir 2005 has also won the Air Sea Global Champion Pinot Noir Trophy.

Air New Zealand Wine Awards chairman of judges, Brent Marris, said Delta Vineyard Marlborough Pinot Noir 2005 was a classic Pinot Noir that was fruit driven with a soft silk texture while also having depth of flavour.

“The trophy winning wine demonstrates the excellence being achieved in New Zealand Pinot Noir winemaking,” he said.

Managed by New Zealand Winegrowers, the 2006 Air New Zealand Wine Awards celebrates 20 years of Air New Zealand’s sponsorship. With 1,737 entries the Air New Zealand Wine Awards is the biggest and most prestigious competition for New Zealand wines.

The Bell Gully Reserve Wine of the Show Trophy and the GlobalCap NZ Champion Sauvignon Blanc Trophy were both won by Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2006.

Marris said the Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2006 was a classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc with beautiful fruit concentration. “This trophy winning wine truly shows what Sauvignon Blanc can achieve.”

At the 2006 Air New Zealand Wine Awards, 18 trophies were awarded to 13 wineries, spread throughout five regions including Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Hawke’s Bay won seven trophies for wines including the Carter & Associates Champion Cabernet Sauvignon or Predominant Blend Trophy, Label and Litho Champion Gewurztraminer Trophy, Bayleys Champion Merlot Trophy, Fruitfed Supplies Champion Merlot Predominant Blend Trophy, Hort Research Champion Other Red Varieties Trophy, BDO Spicers Champion Rosé or Blush Trophy and Business World Travel Champion Syrah Trophy.

Marlborough also won seven trophies including the Air New Zealand Champion Wine of the Show Trophy and Bell Gully Reserve Wine of the Show Trophy. The Marlborough region also received the Air Sea Global Champion Pinot Noir Trophy, GlobalCap NZ Champion Sauvignon Blanc Trophy, Nissan New Zealand Limited Champion Sparkling Wine Trophy, Huka Lodge Champion Pinot Gris Trophy and Marlborough Bottling Company Champion Medium Sweet or Sweet Wine Trophy.

Wairarapa received two trophies including the AMPM Marketing Champion Riesling Trophy and the New World Champion Open White Wine Trophy.

Auckland won the O-I New Zealand Champion Chardonnay Trophy and Central Otago received the Fairfax Media Champion Open Red Wine Trophy.

Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Rob Fyfe said the awards are a real celebration of New Zealand’s winemaking excellence.

“This year is particularly special for us as we celebrate our 20th year as sponsor of these prestigious awards. As the largest single server of New Zealand wine, Air New Zealand dedicates significant time and effort to ensuring we showcase the very best of New Zealand in-flight.”

Mr Fyfe said he was delighted to announce a new scholarship for an apprentice winemaker as the latest addition to Air New Zealand’s very successful Inspiring New Zealanders programme. “Designed for apprentice winemakers, the 12-month Inspiring New Zealanders Scholarship in Wine is designed to nurture our young winemaking talent and in turn help grow the industry.”

International judge Sam Harrop, Master of Wine, praised the organisation and thoroughness of the judging process. Harrop, a New Zealander based in the United Kingdom, is a winemaking consultant.

"I have judged at many wine competitions around the world and of those, the Air New Zealand Wine Awards is one of the best. The quality of judging and the focus and support from all involved means that all wines receive a fair show and get the award they deserve. When consumers see the Air New Zealand Wine Awards logo they should feel confident they’re getting the best," he said.

The 2006 Air New Zealand Wine Awards was held in Hawke’s Bay tonight at the Pettigrew.Green Arena. The glamorous event was attended by 800 guests where the winners of the prestigious trophies were announced.

Guests enjoyed a stunning five course dinner designed by Air New Zealand’s consultant chefs – Rex Morgan from Citron in Wellington and Inspire in Queenstown, Peter Gordon from dine in Auckland and The Providores in London, Geoff Scott from Vinnies in Auckland and Govind Armstrong from Table 8 in Los Angeles and Miami.
